It was the spring of 1980
We were dosing rats with methyl mercury
My classmates said things were gonna be fine,
but then I found out about
Rat Number 49

The observations said it's really mean,
Toughest Sprague-Dawley there had ever been
The thought sent shivers up and down my spine,
That I'd have to work with
Rat Number 49

I looked at it, it snarled at me, and showed me its rage
A million things I'd rather do than reach in that cage
I didn't have a choice so I covered my skin,
I held my breath, I said a prayer, I reached on in
It's clear to see just why I had such fright
It started biting every thing in sight
And now I know that the others weren't a-lyin'
